Porsche 908/8 Turbo

The endurance runner 908

After the grandiosen overall victories with the 1000 km running on the Nürburgring 1970 and 1971 ended the work commitment with the 908/3. Changes of the rule set and thus a prescribed minimum weight of 650 kg for three-litre prototypes starting from 1972 made the employment of the agile vehicle more difficult, but private teams like that of Reinhold Joest did not prevent not to use the car further successfully.

Even though the 908/3 now had to compete with a good 100 kilograms of ballast, Joest drove numerous runs to the Manufacturers' World Championship with his 1972 model; an outstanding second place was at the 1000 km Monza. Until 1974 he used, like some other teams, the naturally aspirated version of the short 908 in the brand World Championship and the Interseries. In 1975, Porsche Porsche customers had the 2.1 litre turbo engine developed in 1974 for the 911 Turbo Carrera RSR at their disposal, which also fitted the 908/3 with a few modifications to the frame and bodywork.
